There was a setback when the economy collapsed in 2008, the down fall of dot com’s could have scared off brick and mortar business and newly launched startups from seeing the benefits to being online, but it didn’t. In contrast, ecommerce is making huge strides, increasing annually by 25%.i
It’s not only ecommerce that is seeing the rise in popularity. There is a high demand, 150,000 digital jobs are predicted to infiltrate the employment market in Ireland alone by 2020, and a short supply of digital professionals to fill the positions according to John Kennedy, a technology journalist with Silicon Republic.ii In the current state of the world, there are not enough qualified and skilled digital professionals across the globe to fill the openings. This means the demand is much stronger than supply, giving recent graduates a strong hand to play.
There are also more career choices than before. Digital business, even though it is not a new phenomenon, is picking up traction and more specialized positions are being created to fill dynamic needs of business online. Digital giants like Google, LinkedIn and Twitter can attest. There is an ever-steady flow of job announcements from large multinationals to national brands. With a wide range of new opportunities available, digital business professionals and marketers can be very specific about what type of company they want to work for and where.
Another perk in a demand driven market where supply falls short, is that if you are talented and proficient at what you do, there is greater leverage to negotiate salary figures.
Digital transformation is accelerating and changing the way society conducts business. The drastic impact of the digital transformation has and will continue to have on business will include the advent of new financing models, an increase in business innovation, data becoming the new capital currency and rapid acceleration in the global demand for digital employees.iii The final result, which will come in time, will be a new dynamic that will not only change business but society as a whole.
As fast as technology changes, there needs to be a skilled pool of professionals ready to step up to the challenges and take on roles that will change the face of business. These are only a handful of the positions that are currently available to graduates with a degree in digital business.
