22 June 2017- It was a day for joyful jubilee as students, parents, faculty and friends gathered to celebrate the year’s long-awaited capstone event, the graduation of GBSB Global Business School’s Class of 2017!

The big day has arrived.

The graduation commencement and reception was held at the Hotel SB Diagonal Zero Barcelona, a contemporary 4-star hotel by the Fòrum and the beach. Students, family, and friends arrived around 4 in the afternoon to mix, mingle and relish in the vibrant atmosphere such a fantastic milestone generates.

Misozi Tembo and Ioannis Antonopoulos took the lead as the hosts for the festivities, welcoming esteemed guests from across the globe.

Words of wisdom inspiring us all.

Dr. Yelena Smirnova, Dean of GBSB Global Business School, addressed the audience with a short message about embracing failure as a rite of passage. Without making mistakes in life, we will never learn. Students should not fear failure as a setback or become discouraged, but rather learn from the experience and continue to reach for the stars.

The MA in Fashion and Luxury Business Management students took their graduation to a higher level and added a creative run way show modeling the school’s core values on their personally designed t-shirts, giving the audience a distinct taste of how GBSB Global stands apart from other business schools in both its high standard of curriculum and values.

MA in Business Innovation & MA in Communication and Future Marketing

Professor Stephen Harrison stole the hearts and minds of the audience as he took them on a stroll down his memory lane. He is the professor that students will confess made the classroom not only educational but entertaining through his gift for storytelling. Professor Harrison would not let this last opportunity pass him by without regaling the graduates with one last final adieu.

Professor Harrison painted the picture of his 16-year-old self in secondary school in the UK. The Head Master in his final farewell address speech told students to “go out and get proper jobs.” Mystified as to what sort of ‘proper job’ his Head Master was referring to, Mr. Harrison, at the time, enlisted in the airborne and became a fighter pilot, surely that was a ‘proper job.’ Five years after that dreadful speech that limited the potential of so many, Mr. Harrison went back to the office of his former Head Master and presented himself and his accomplishments. Impressed by such fetes, he was asked to speak to the student body about his success.

“There will always be naysayers,” Professor Harrison advised GBSB Global students. Quoting John F. Kennedy, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.” Defy the naysayers, and in the words of Nike, “Just do it.”

A special dance performance was provided by a select number of MSC & MBA students rounding off the formal commencement ceremony and marking the students’ time in Barcelona. An upbeat finale that reared the audience to their foot and put a little groove in their step.

Not everything about the ceremony was traditional, but in keeping in step with the past, the traditional cap toss came at the end. The entire Class of 2017 climbed on stage to toss their black cap in the air with pomp and circumstance.

Let the celebrations commence.

Immediately after the ceremony, the celebrations began, with wine and hors d’oeuvres enjoyed on the hotel’s outdoor terrace. Graduates socialized with family, faculty, and friends, reminiscing on the past nine months of study, their memories and speaking of their future endeavors. The mood of the celebration was light and merry. For the day marked the turning of a page. A school that brought such a diverse, talented array of individuals together had to provide a proper send off, for tomorrow they would venture out on a new path headed for greatness.
