Is an MBA still worth it in the age of AI? The new value of business education

Artificial intelligence is changing the nature of professional work faster than most organizations can redesign their jobs, career paths and talent strategies. Tasks that were previously assigned to junior analysts are now being automated. Consulting firms are recruiting more engineers and data scientists. Employers are increasingly expecting graduates to understand not only business, but also data, technology and AI-supported decision-making.
This transformation raises an important question for students and experienced professionals alike: Is an MBA still worth pursuing in the age of AI?
The evidence suggests that it is, but the value of an MBA is no longer simply defined by the qualification itself. Rather, it depends on whether the program develops the strategic judgment, technological fluency, leadership capacity and practical experience required to create value in an AI-driven economy.
AI is changing consulting, not eliminating it
The debate gained renewed attention when Paul Griggs, the CEO of PwC US, revealed the career advice he gives to his children who are of college age. According to Business Insider, PwC is hiring fewer traditional consultants and accountants than two years ago, while recruiting more data scientists, engineers, and machine learning specialists.
Yet Griggs remains positive about consulting careers and graduate business education. PwC continues to recruit from MBA and master’s programs because organizations still need professionals who can understand complex business problems, evaluate alternatives, communicate with decision-makers and drive change.
This distinction matters. AI is not simply removing jobs. It is changing the nature of valuable work within those roles.
Routine research, preliminary analysis, document review, financial modeling and presentation preparation can increasingly be accelerated by AI. However, defining the right problem, assessing the reliability of the output, recognizing organizational constraints, managing stakeholders and accepting responsibility for a decision remain fundamentally human responsibilities.
The consultant of the future may perform fewer manual tasks. This does not necessarily make the role any less important. It makes the role more demanding.
Entry-level roles are becoming more senior
The traditional career ladder enabled junior professionals to gradually develop their expertise. They learned by gathering information, building spreadsheets, preparing reports and observing how senior colleagues made decisions. AI can now perform part of this apprenticeship work in seconds.
The PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, based on over one billion job advertisements across six continents, describes this as the ‘seniorization’ of entry-level work.
According to the report, entry-level roles with high exposure to AI are seven times more likely to require capabilities traditionally associated with senior positions, including judgment, leadership, creativity and interpersonal communication. Openings for these increasingly demanding junior roles grew by 35% between 2019 and 2025, while other entry-level roles declined by 10%.
The implications are significant. While young professionals may receive greater responsibility earlier in their careers, they will also have less time to acquire the judgment that this responsibility requires.
The GMAC 2026 Corporate Recruiters Survey reinforces this concern. One-third of participating employers reported replacing at least some entry-level jobs with AI. At the same time, employers identified communication, adaptability, problem-solving, strategic thinking, data analysis and the ability to use AI tools as becoming more important.
The entry-level job is not disappearing. Rather, it is being redesigned to require a more advanced combination of technical and human capabilities.
AI fluency is not the same as business judgment
Professionals must know how to use AI, but technical familiarity alone is not enough.
A field experiment involving Boston Consulting Group professionals, conducted by researchers affiliated with Harvard Business School and other institutions, demonstrates this. When the tasks fell within AI’s capabilities, the consultants using AI completed 12.2% more tasks, worked 25.1% faster, and produced higher-quality results.
However, the results changed when consultants faced a complex managerial task that was beyond the technology’s capabilities. Those using AI were 19 percentage points less likely to reach the correct conclusion than participants working without it.
The researchers call this uneven boundary the ‘jagged technological frontier’. AI may perform exceptionally well on one task and poorly on another that appears equally manageable. Its output can also sound convincing despite its reasoning being incomplete or incorrect.
This is precisely why analytical judgment is becoming more valuable. Professionals need to know when to delegate a task to AI, how to frame the request, which evidence to verify and whether the final decision requires human experience and contextual understanding.
AI can generate an answer. However, leadership requires determining whether this answer is correct and whether acting on it is responsible.
What Employers now expect from Business Graduates
The value of graduate business education should be assessed against the skills that employers actually require.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that 39% of workers’ core skills will change by 2030. While AI and big data lead the list of fastest-growing skills, analytical thinking is still the most frequently identified essential capability. Resilience, adaptability, leadership, creativity and lifelong learning are also becoming increasingly important.
Similarly, GMAC’s research found that, over the next five years, employers expect AI skills and strategic thinking to become two of the most valuable capabilities for business graduates. Among employers particularly concerned with AI, 67% want graduates who can use it to automate tasks, while almost half expect graduates to apply AI to research, business strategy and decision-making.
The emerging profile is neither a technologist without business knowledge nor a manager who delegates all technical questions. Employers want professionals who can bridge the gap between the two fields.
They need leaders who understand the capabilities of technology, its impact on the organization, the risks it creates, and how it can be converted into sustainable business value.
What should an AI-Era MBA deliver?
An MBA remains relevant when it develops capabilities that cannot be automated. A forward-looking program should provide five key forms of preparation:
1. AI and data literacy
Not all MBA graduates need to become machine-learning engineers. However, they do need to understand how AI systems influence business models, operations, customer experience, risk and competitive strategy.
2. Critical and analytical judgement
Students should learn to evaluate evidence, question assumptions, recognize unreliable output and make decisions when information is incomplete or contradictory.
3. Cross-functional business knowledge
Technological decisions affect finance, marketing, operations, human resources, governance and strategy simultaneously. An MBA helps professionals to understand these interdependencies, rather than viewing innovation as an isolated technical function.
4. Leadership and communication
Although AI can assist with analysis, it cannot take responsibility, build trust, resolve conflict, motivate a team or negotiate organizational change. These remain central management responsibilities.
5. Applied problem solving
Case studies, simulations, collaborative projects and capstone assignments enable students to apply their knowledge to complex business situations. This practical experience is especially important at a time when traditional entry-level learning opportunities are becoming more limited.
An MBA that delivers only theoretical knowledge risks becoming irrelevant. However, an MBA that connects technology with strategy, leadership and real-world decision-making is becoming increasingly valuable precisely because AI is transforming work.
